SAFE WATER DRINKING WITH A REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER FILTER

Providing clean drinking water at homes, schools, and industries is an urgent need for better health and development alike. Science has come up with UV treated water solutions to kill the harmful bacteria in drinking water. Still, it cannot remove the contaminated particulate matter and minerals suspended in water which cannot be broken down and removed by UV treated light. 

For that, the RO or Reverse Osmosis technology has proved to be a breakthrough. This technology was initially underrated with its invention by a French physicist, Jean Antoine Nollet, in 1748. Later a student project at Thayer Academy, Massachusetts in the USA applied the RO process in water purification. Reverse Osmosis water filters gained widespread popularity since then. 

Osmosis and the RO Technology

To get acquainted with the RO process, firstly, it becomes essential to know about the simple process called osmosis. Considering water as the solvent, and the impurities as the solute particles, osmosis involves the movement of solvent molecules from a lower concentrated solution to a higher concentrated solution, through a porous membrane that separates both the solutions.

This movement is induced by a change in pressure in the RO process, to move the water molecules through the semi-porous membrane in the filter apparatus. The membrane lets only water molecules to pass through, segregating the dirt and unwanted minerals suspended in the water. Through this, the water is rendered potable.

RO Technology in Water Filters

The process of osmosis, when initiated by the use of artificial force applied from one side to get potable water on the other side of the membrane, is the working technique in RO technology-aided water filters. This process, when complemented with the UV treatment of water, kills the harmful organisms in the water, making it safe to consume. 

The Reverse Osmosis water filters need electricity to operate, to induce the change in pressure on each side of the membrane. This process was mainly used to purify seawater to obtain drinking water in areas that had high salinity in the groundwater table. It proved to be very beneficial to them and has since gained popularity worldwide for its ability to provide safe drinking water.
